-
- Gentlepersons,
-
- I have had a number of inquiries regarding my implementation of scalable views
- in MacApp, and my plans for making the code available to the MacApp community.
- I hope that those of you who have linked me in this regard will accept this
- "broadcast" link as a response to your individual inquiries.
-
- Accompanying this link, please find a compressed package entitled
- ScalableViews.PKG. It contains the paper that I presented to the MacApp
- Developer's Conference ("Scalable Views — a Proposed Change to the MacApp View
- Architecture") in MacWrite 4.5 format, and a non-debug version of the
- DrawShapes program that has been modified to use scaleable views. This paper
- will be published in the proceedings of the First Annual MADA Conference (which
- may simply be an expanded edition of FrameWorks).
-
- The implementation of scalable views requires a large number of very minor
- changes to MacApp itself. It is, so far, a work-in-progress. There are still
- a few bugs in the system, and some unimplemented features — all described in
- the paper. Further, the implementation is based on MacApp 2.0B9, and must be
- converted to MacApp 2.0 final.
-
- I will be contacting David Goldman (Guerilla-in-Chief) to set up a Guerilla
- Task Force on scalable views, but I don't expect to have an official Guerilla
- project until after I've converted the implementation to MacApp 2.0 final.
- After that, with a little help from Gentlepersons Everywhere, I hope to get the
- bugs out, the features in, and the implementation available to all interested
- parties. If you have an interest in joining the Guerilla Task Force on
- Scalable Views, just send me a link. Fixing the few remaining bugs will
- require an intimate knowledge of the implementation details of MacApp's view
- architecture.
-
- Although it has the approval of a number of individual Apple employees, the
- implementation is neither sanctioned nor opposed by Apple itself (they have
- other things to worry about right now). Apple has no plans to incorporate
- scalable views into MacApp 2.0, 2.1, or any subsequent version of MacApp
- (although we're hoping to get them to do so). There's been talk of a "Ninja
- MacApp," incorporating all of the features that MADA would like to see in
- subsequent versions of Apple's official MacApp, but there's been no final
- action on this so far, to my knowledge. If Ninja MacApp were to spring into
- being, scalable views would certainly be incorporated into it, at the earliest
- opportunity. In any event, everyone on MacApp.Tech$ will be notified when the
- scalable views implementation "goes final."
-
- I hope that this answers everybody's questions, at least for the nonce.
- Looking forward to rampant and gratuitous scaling, I remain
-
- Yours,
-
- James Plamondon
